Friends of the Universe

A few years ago, I made some cards that resembled the cover of the current Depeche Mode album “Songs of the Universe” for my friends. I had a few left over, so for Christmas 2011 I added gems to them and sent them as Christmas cards to some of my DM-fan friends. I have so many cards I’ve never blogged about so even though it’s nowhere near Christmas, you’re getting a Christmas-ish blog post!

Here is what the cards looked like before I added Christmas ornaments to them. Now I wish I had blinged out all of the original cards I made because I like ’em better with gems.

Thanks for reading my super short blog post and have a great weekend!

About Stephanie Chumbley

Growing up in the shadow of the Space Needle, I loved drawing portraits with a #2 pencil and sometimes a ballpoint pen because I liked the challenge. I collected pens and pencils and enjoyed looking at fonts and logos and replicating them by hand. I was in AP art classes in high school and took some graphic design classes at Seattle Central. While in college, I had a part-time job making signs for Drug Emporium / Longs Drugs with my "Steph Font." In my 20s, I made a lot of invitations for dinner parties and later, when I bought my Cricut Expression electronic cutter in 2008, I started making cards for all occasions. In 2009, I discovered Close to My Heart and enjoyed being my Consultant's best customer... but in May 2011, I finally gave in and became and Independent Consultant. It was a very good decision! :-) Nearly everything I make is given away or sold so others can enjoy some handmade art. I've made over 1,000 cards and projects and this blog serves as a way to share and hopefully inspire others to create projects of their own. Someday I hope to catch up and blog about all the cards I've made.

    • Bonjour Sandra from Germany! Je parle très peu francais. Thank you so much for your comment and for liking my Depeche Mode cards. I made the “Friends of the Universe” by color-matching cardstock to the colors represented on the album cover and I cut the pieces of paper very thin. I have a Cricut Expression electronic cutting machine and I cut the center circle from it. I think I used the letter “O” from an alphabet cartridge. Then I carefully glued everything in place as I looked carefully at the album artwork to match. When I turned them into holiday cards, I added crystal gems in the appropriate color. Some of them started off clear, but I used my Copic alcohol markers to color them the right shade. For the Delta Machine cards and ornaments, I found clip art of the new DM logo and enlarged it and then printed it out. I carefully cut the shapes with a craft knife on a self-healing mat and used them as a template to trace the DM shapes. I have a few more Delta Machine cards to blog about. I already made the cards but have yet to share them on my blog. Check back soon! 🙂
